Futurity Rules & Forms
Futurity Rules, 2008
General Rules
Only owners who are members in good standing with the Southern Wisconsin Appaloosa Horse Assn. may nominate their own horses to the futurity.
All owners of horses participating in all divisions must be members of SWAHA. (Please send memberships to the SWAHA treasurer only!)
All futurity classes will be judged according to the rules set by the Appaloosa Horse Club, Moscow, Idaho.
All entries must be registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club, Moscow, Idaho.
The judge(s) shall be approved Appaloosa judge(s) listed by the Appaloosa Horse Club, Moscow, Idaho.
The same member may nominate any number of horses.
Change in ownership does not affect a paid entry. Transfer must be reported to the Futurity Secretary within ten (10) days.
Horses originally nominated by a SWAHA member and subsequently sold are eligible to remain in the futurity providing the new owner joins SWAHA within ten (10) days. The new owner is responsible for any remaining fees.
Once a horse is nominated, there is to be no substitution.
Payment notices are only sent out as a courtesy. The nominator is responsible for all fees. Payments not received on time will be returned and the nomination dropped from the futurity unless a late fee has been paid.
Nominations and payment must be received or postmarked no later than the due dates given in each division. Any payment falling due on a Sunday will be accepted only if postmarked no later than the Monday immediately following. There will be no grace period regarding the initial nominations and all payments. Should there be an error in the nomination or membership status, the nominator will be notified by the Futurity Secretary and given fifteen (15) days to make the necessary corrections. Any nomination not complete after that period of time will be dropped.
All futurity classes will be judged by all judges, scores will be combined. A call judge will be designated before the judging begins.
Nomination fees for any horse that does not show on the day of the futurity are forfeited and will remain in the nominated class unless there are no entries on the day of the futurity. In that case all nomination fees will be redistributed to the remaining classes. All money will be paid out in the current year.
Futurity checks will be mailed within thirty (30) days of the show.

SWAHA will provide two handlers for the round pen futurity; one will bring each weanling from a designated location outside of the arena to the second handler in the round pen. The second handler will set each weanling up for a confirmation review and then proceed to work each horse at a walk, trot and lope in both directions inside the round pen. The first handler will retrieve the horse and bring in the next. All horses will be shown by the SWAHA provided handlers. NO other owners or exhibitors will enter the inside of the arena. All sexes will be shown in the same class.
If a horse’s chin or nose area shows signs of broken skin, rawness or bleeding, the horse will be eliminated from the competition.
The SWAHA Weanling Round Pen Futurity should be entered according to the performance fee schedule.
Weanling Round Pen will have a total working time of 90 seconds, which is 45 seconds in each direction. “The horse is to be shown moving freely, with the handler doing nothing more than to show the whip to the horse, i.e. the handler will not strike the horse with the whip.”
